Peru is one of those rare destinations that works for almost everyone, the solo backpacker counting soles, the couple celebrating an anniversary, the family on a once-in-a-decade adventure. The landscape doesn't care what your budget is. The ruins are just as awe-inspiring either way.
But how you experience Peru changes dramatically depending on how you spend. Here's an honest guide to both ends of the spectrum, and some things that are simply non-negotiable no matter what.
Getting There & Getting Around
Budget: Long-distance buses in Peru are genuinely excellent — comfortable, affordable, and scenic. The Cruz del Sur and Oltursa lines are reliable, and the overnight buses between Lima and Cusco save you both a night's accommodation and a full day.
Splurge: Fly between cities and skip the 20-hour bus entirely. Internal flights with LATAM or Sky Airline are surprisingly affordable when booked early, and the aerial views of the Andes are a journey in themselves.
Both: Shared colectivo taxis between towns in the Sacred Valley are dirt cheap and completely normal, even luxury travelers use them between Pisac, Urubamba, and Ollantaytambo.
Where to Sleep
Budget: Cusco has some of the best hostels in South America — think colonial courtyards, rooftop terraces, and social common areas where you'll meet half your travel group for the next two weeks. Look around the San Blas neighbourhood for character-filled guesthouses.
Splurge: Cusco also has extraordinary luxury hotels that are entirely worth it if you can manage it. Converted Inca palaces, boutique heritage properties, private courtyards with mountain views. The Belmond Palacio Nazarenas and Inkaterra La Casona are the kind of places that become part of the trip story.
Both: Wherever you sleep, acclimatise properly. Cusco sits at 3,400 metres. Your body needs a day or two regardless of what your bed cost.
Food - Peru Is a Win at Every Price Point
Budget: Peru's menú del día is one of the great travel discoveries. For a few soles, you get a full three-course lunch - soup, main, and dessert, at local restaurants across the country. Market food, empanadas, and fresh fruit juices round out the diet beautifully.
Splurge: Lima has become one of the world's great food cities. Central, Maido, and Astrid & Gastón regularly appear on global best restaurant lists. If you have one night in Lima and a flexible budget, eat at one of them. It will change how you think about food.
Both: Fresh trout. Wherever you are in the Sacred Valley, order it. It comes from the river, it costs almost nothing, and it's extraordinary.
The Train to Machu Picchu - The One Non-Negotiable
Here's the honest truth: the train journey through the Sacred Valley is essential regardless of your budget.
For budget travelers, Peru Rail's Expedition service is affordable and gets you there with panoramic windows and real mountain views. For splurge travelers, the Belmond Hiram Bingham is one of the most luxurious rail experiences in the world — white glove service, gourmet food, live music, and a journey that feels like it belongs in a different era entirely.
And then there's the experience at Inka Ayway, where you don't even need a ticket to board to feel the magic. Walk along the railtracks, stand beside the train, feel the altitude and the valley air and the weight of where you are. It's one of those moments that costs nothing and stays with you forever.
Whether you're spending carefully or spending freely, don't skip the train. It's the heart of the Sacred Valley experience.
The Bottom Line
Experience | Budget | Splurge |
Getting around | Bus / colectivo | Internal flights |
Sleeping | San Blas hostels | Boutique heritage hotels |
Eating | Menú del día, market food | Lima's world-class restaurants |
The train | Expedition / Vistadome | Hiram Bingham / Inca Rail 360° |
Machu Picchu | Standard entry | Private guide + sunrise slot |
Peru rewards every kind of traveler. You don't need unlimited money to have an unforgettable trip, you just need to know what matters to you and lean into it completely.
The mountains are waiting. The only wrong way to see them is not at all.
